All Aboard

Tom is waiting for his train. It is cold and drafty on the platform. He decides to move into the waiting room, which is much warmer and less drafty. The station is deserted except for him, the display suggests his train will arrive in about 30 minutes. As he waited, he began to feel drowsy, and slightly unwell. Nothing specific, just not too good. He felt tired and was becoming less aware of his surroundings, which were not particularly interesting.

Suddenly he was awoken from this by the sound of his train arriving. He felt much better for that half hour snooze. He leapt up and exited the waiting room; not wanting to miss the train. To his surprise it was an old style of train with manual doors at the end of the carriages. A blast from the past he thought, as he opened the nearest door and boarded the train. Once he had closed the door the train started to move out. Tom watched the platform as they moved. To his surprise there appeared to be someone sat in the waiting room; they must have arrived after he left. Unless he didn’t see them when he woke up. He hoped they didn’t think him rude, just walking out.

Tom moved into the carriage to find a seat. It was surprisingly busy for that line. As he walked through, he spotted David.
“David, hallo, how are you? I haven’t seen you for ages.” David looked up a Tom and smiled.
“Yes, it has been a while. Just before the funeral as I recall.”
“Who’s funeral? Tom enquired.
“Mine!” he replied with a smile.
“What… How…” Tom floundered.
“Tom, you are dead now. This train is full of people you have known and lost during your life. Wonder on through, chat and enjoy the journey, you have as long as you want. Welcome aboard.”
